About Plates
Personalised plates, cherished numbers, cherished registrations, private plates ... don't be confused by the different terminology, they are all one and the same. What makes these plates different is that they resemble words or names that convey something about their owners.
Different plates mean different things from one car owner to the next, they may be made up of initials or birthdates or reflect a hobby or business that directly relates to the owner of the vehicle. The cost of the plate depends on the rarity or popularity of the letters and numbers involved therefore a plate that is made up of exact lettering will inevitably be more expensive than one that has been devised of digits made to look like letters.
How it works, is that the representation of words and names are mainly derived by using numbers that resemble letters in unison with actual letters. As the UK's registration system does not allow for more than three actual letters to appear without an intervening number, unless the key word you are looking for happens to be just three letters long, the use of numbers as letters will be necessary but can work with great effect as follows:
| 0 = D | 1= I or L | 2 = R or Z | 3 = E | 4 = A | 5 = S |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 = B or G | 7 = T or Y | 8 = A or B | 9 = G | 11 = U or H | |
| 12 = R | 13 = B | 1V = N | D = O | VV = W | V = U |
Examples:
13 OND = BOND
J45 SON = JASON
S4 LLY = SALLY
TEN 15 = TENNIS
H34 VEN = HEAVEN

You do need to bear in mind that in order to transfer a registration plate, the car from which the plate is taken from and the car to which it is being transferred to, must have current tax and MOT certificates. However, it is possible to purchase a plate even if you do not have a vehicle, or your vehicle has no tax or MOT under a retention certificate. This entitlement to display the plate is granted within the certificate and can be transferred to a car at a later stage. The certificate is valid for 12 months.
It should further be noted that it is illegal to try and mis-space the plate so that certain characters look similar to words for instance placing a 1 & 3 close together to make the letter B. If noticed, there can be a fine of up to £1,000 against the offending individual!
